X-Men: First Class... movie review

First, let me start off by saying First Class is a serious exaggeration for this film. As a fan of the original comic book series and cartoon from the 90’s the latest addition to the X-Men series is a complete disgrace to its franchise, if I were Stan Lee I’d lay low for a while. It’s frightening to think it took four people to write the screenplay, as my six-year old nephew probably could have done a better job. This is why some of the best scripts have one, I repeat ONE writer. It’s like the old saying goes, too many cooks are gonna spoil the stew.

The story itself isn’t terrible despite is alternate truths. Basically any true fans would have to forget all pre-existing character backgrounds and original storylines, somewhat similar to J.J. Abram’s 2009 hit Star Trek (minus the parallel universe). As was the case with the first three X-Men and X-Men Origins Wolverine, the visual effects and sound design are remarkable. It’s not quite as deafening as Thor but even the average moviegoer can hear the effort and love that was put into every punch, kick and explosion.

Overall this movie, like many of the other Marvel film is entertaining. The acting leaves something to be desired with the exception of Michael Fassbender (Erik/Magneto) Kevin Bacon (Sebastian Shaw) and Nicholas Hoult (Hank McCoy/Beast) who all deliver noteworthy performances.

In a vain attempt to keep from spoiling the plot in any way, I leave you with this basic summary. I didn’t dislike it but as a fan I didn’t love it. If you’re looking for expensive visual effects, mind-blowing sound and can suspend all prior knowledge of the franchise than this film is for you. If not, take your $12, order a pizza and stream something good off of Netflix.
