Showtime debuts Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men directed by Sacha Jenkins: the four-part docu-series captures the Wu-Tang phenomena that swept a nation.

Staten Island’s beloved sons Wu-Tang Clan were welcomed to this year’s Sundance Festival to debut the first two episodes of Wu-Tang: Of Mics and Men.  As the Wu comes upon the 25 anniversary of their historical debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) — Showtime will unveil their 4-part docu-series Of Mics and Men directed by Sacha Jenkins.

Jenkins says he gave the four part docu-series that title “because they are an American classic.”    The series aims to capture the legacy of the Wu -Tang Clang and the imprint they left on the nation. From their meager beginnings in Staten Island to a profound culture loved by generations young and old all over the world.  The film will cover the last 25 years of Wu Tangs’s remaining nine founding members with riveting and intimate interviews from RZA, GZA,  Inspectah Deck, Raekwon the Chef, U-God, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Masta Killa and Cappadonna.  We will also see archival footage and concert performances never seen before, including the departed but never forgotten Ol’ Dirty Bastard who died in 2004.

of mics and men posterWu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men opens in the heart of Park Hill Projects. Longtime members of The Wu like Rza, Method Man and U-God, reminisce about life coming up in Staten Island and Brooklyn in the 80’s and 90’s.

The director, Sacha Jenkins brings a humanizing aspect to the film. “Their ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit brought them together to overcome the poverty, violence and oppression of their neighborhoods,” Showtime said in a release. “But it was music and their shared lyrical genius that allowed them to form the most recognized musical movement in the world, all while walking the treacherous tightrope that links business with brotherhood.”

Sacha brilliantly walks us through the real life struggles of brothers who connected with generations young and old because they could relate to their struggle. In this film he wanted people to see and understand their music on a deeper level. “These are the things I wanted in the film for people to understand what it is, where this music is coming from, who these guys are.  Inside of seeing them in their natural environment, you see the humanity of who they are, and hopefully people will watch this film and have an understanding of who we really are. We’re not just rappers; we’re not just thugs. Hip-hop empowered these guys. It made them change their environment and their situation, and they go from housing projects in Staten Island to inspire people across the world.”

The series chronicles the lives of a group who carved their place in Hip-Hop history and has managed to stay relevant and influential throughout their 25-year career. The film amazingly captures Wu Tang’s raw talent, brotherhood and growth as men for whom failure was not an option. Profoundly honest, gritty and entertaining. A must watch for Wu Tang fans both old and new!

Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men premieres on Showtime – Friday, May 10th

The European Tour is set to embark in the UK with Public Enemy and De La Soul and is also scheduled to kick off on May 10th.
