“Who’s Lizzo” begins trending on Twitter after NY Post article circulates about the artist and her crossing over in musical genres.

Whew chile, looks like Ye West is not the only one who can’t seem to stop talking about Lizzo. The singer was recently featured in an article by the NY Post about her success in crossing over in musical genres. The article’s headline reads “Lizzo on her crossover success: “I am not making music for white people”.

The headline is catchy enough, but what caught my eye right after was the host of Twitter users who responded to the tweet about the article by tweeting “Who’s Lizzo”. With one user with the Twitter handle Great American Mail quoting the article’s headline in their own tweet captioned: “Lizzo says: I’m not making music for white people.” What do you say? To which he also received the response “Who’s Lizzo” from many other Twitter users.

The article begins with a quote from the Detroit born flutist: “The thing is, when a black artist reaches a certain level of popularity, it’s going to be a predominantly white crowd; I am not making music for white people. I am a Black woman, I am making music from my Black experience, for me to heal myself [from] the experience we call life.”

Well ain’t that just grand, by the way, who’s “Lizzo” ? https://t.co/o0UV9pW1wz

Encase you too do not know who Lizzo is, she is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, born April 27, 1988. She is a singer and rapper born in Detroit, Michigan, who later moved to Houston, Texas, where she began performing before moving to Minneapolis, where she began her recording career in hip hop music.

Prior to signing with Nice Life Recording Company and Atlantic Records, Lizzo released two studio albums—Lizzobangers in 2013 and Big Grrrl Small World in 2015. Lizzo’s first major-label EP, Coconut Oil, was released in 2016.

Lizzo attained mainstream success with the release of her third studio album, Cuz I Love You released in 2019, which peaked at number four on the US Billboard 200. The album spawned the singles “Juice” and “Tempo”. The deluxe version of the album included Lizzo’s 2017 single “Truth Hurts”, which became a viral sleeper hit, two years after its initial release. It topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and became the longest-leading solo song by a female rapper.

Around this time, her 2016 single “Good as Hell” also climbed the charts, reaching the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. Lizzo received eight nominations at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, the most for any artist that year, including nominations for each of the “Big Four” categories; and eventually won the awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts”, and Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song “Jerome”.

In 2021, Lizzo released the single “Rumors” featuring Cardi B, which debuted in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. Her fourth studio album Special released this summer was preceded by its lead single “About Damn Time”, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Aside from singing and rapping, Lizzo has also worked as an actor: she served as a voice actor in the animated film UglyDolls and appeared in the crime comedy-drama film Hustlers. She is also the host of the Amazon Prime Video reality television series Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Competition Program. In 2019, Time named Lizzo as “Entertainer of the Year” for her meteoric rise and contributions to music. In addition to her three Grammy Awards, she has also won a Billboard Music Award, a BET Award, and two Soul Train Music Awards.

Who is Lizzo you ask? Chile, they better put some respect on her name! Let us know how you feel in the comments!
