Following his interesting musical trajectory and epic rise to fame, Burna Boy is an artist whose art and creative genius are beyond forgery and imitation. From churning out hit smashes, selling out shows in choicest arenas in Europe, winning a Grammy award, and constantly bringing Afrobeats to the fore of the conversation, he has proved beyond doubts the mastery of his art and excellence of his delivery.

Burna Boy first announced the release of his sixth studio album during a US tour in April, 2022. Ever since then, fans across the world anticipated and waited eagerly for Odogwu’s next album.

After a wait that seemed like a never-ending one, Burna Boy’s sixth studio album, Love, Damini was finally released on the 8th of July, 2022 – just a few days after the singer’s 31st birthday. It made a perfect birthday gift for his fans all over the world. The album, which is unarguably an impressive body of work is now available for streaming on all platforms has continued to garner incredible reception and love ever since.

“Love, Damini” is reportedly the self-acclaimed African Giant’s most personal album so far. In it, Burna Boy takes us on a journey and gives us a glimpse into his life vulnerabilities and struggles. He gives us hints and fragments of his childhood, rough patch in his career, romantic life, and every other thing in-between. The album is a 19-track album with different featured artists like Popcaan, Kehlani, Ed Sheeran, and others.

One of the tracks garnering so much attention is “Last Last.” The track at a point in US Twitter trended with up to 1.5m mentions. Realizing that lots of fans vibing to “Last Last” don’t actually know what is being said, Parle Mag has decided to give its readers an insight into what’s being said in the “almighty” Afrobeats banger.

“Last Last” addresses his relationship with “the love of his life,” his vulnerabilities in the relationship, the painful break up and the toll it took on his life. In case you are wondering who could have deserved this much emotions, make no mistakes. It’s no other than the British rapper and singer Steflon Don. Stefflon Don was born in Birmingham, England, and is of Jamaican descent.

In “Last Last,” the singer Burna Boy begins by making an allusion to breakfast, saying:

“E don cast. Last last, na everybody go chop breakfast.”

“Breakfast” in this context does not in any way refer to croissants and coffee or any other meal eaten in the morning, but rather something more heartfelt. “Breakfast” is a trendy word amongst young people in Nigeria used to describe “break up or romantic rupture,” in a less emotional and almost laughable manner.

There’s also a trending saying among the gen z in Nigeria that everyone in a relationship will eventually eat/chop breakfast (get heartbroken). This trending belief is what Burna made into a melody using the pidgin language in the line, “Last Last, na everybody go chop breakfast.”

“Last Last” by the way is used in Nigeria to mean “Finally” or “At the end.”

In this track, Burna Boy lets us into his romantic struggles and imperfections as a human being, not as Burna the superstar. Listening further, the hook, “Igbo and Shayo” meaning “Weed and Liquor” became his subsequent solace and companion through solitude.

The sample of the legendary Toni Braxton’s hit song R&B “Wasn’t Man Enough For Me” doesn’t only blend in perfectly with the lyrics of the song, but the artistic effect and harmonized Afrobeats instrumentals engender a whole new vibe that eases the tension of the atmosphere; yet, still maintaining the seriousness of the artist’s narrative.

Love, Damini gives us fragments of Burna Boy’s life and experiences, “Last Last” turns out being a mega hit, with an amazing feel, but it’s a sad song, about coping with a break-up.
