A Classic Revisited: "Weak" by SWV - Those Sisters Did Not Come To Play

“Weak” is the song that EVERY Black Girl will sing at the top of their lungs when they’re in LOVE, LOVE. It’s an anthem at this point. I specifically remember recording it off the radio and playing it back a million times so that I could write down the words and learn them. It took a while, but I finally got it.

First we gotta talk about Coko’s voice. Damn. When she comes in with that, “I try hard, to fight it…no way can I denyyyy it.” You know you’re listening to a seasoned singer. Like black people seasoning, not the bland white people potato salad kind. SWV can’t work if it’s not those particular three voices together, that’s for sure, but you also can’t deny that once Coko starts singing, she commands the song. They all complement each other, and make hits in the process of doing so.

I remember watching a TV show that SWV was on and they were going to perform. Prior to the event they were told that they possibly had to cut down their set time and not include “Weak,” to which Coko responded, “I’m not stepping on a stage and NOT singing “Weak”! It’s just not happening.” And I appreciated that. Can you imagine going to an SWV concert and them not singing that song?? Blasphemy. Needless to say, “Weak” was added back to the set list.

“Cause my heart starts beating triple time, with thoughts of loving you on my mind. I can’t figure out just what to do, when the cause and cure is youuuuuuu…” I’m sure those words are sung amongst a lot of the lovers over holidays, and I’m here for it. Lee Lee, Taj and Coko, SWV or Sister’s With Voices, created a song that makes mofos weak in the knees! If that’s not enough to make you learn all the words and call it a classic, I don’t know what is.
