In a genre that’s predominately heterosexual men who thrive off of misogyny, these top LGBTQIA+ hip-hop artists to follow are changing the narrative–one banger at a time.

As you may know, the rap game is (unfortunately) one of the hardest industries to break into (specifically) for talent within the rainbow community. From gender labels to music politics, sexual minorities are still severely oppressed in the evergrowing business. If they aren’t policed for their raw lyricism, they’re told to pick a side or dumb it down for the sake of the public’s eye.

However, while the overhead(s) have often tried to silence the individuals who aren’t considered “conventionally” marketable, there are rhymers whose flows are too magnetic ever to be muffled. Despite society’s pre-judgment, they’ve excelled at proving themselves with every listen, crushing barriers far beyond their identities and the unnecessary chaos surrounding their personal preferences.

By now, we’re sure everyone knows who Saucy Santana is. But… if not, it’s time to get acquainted. The self-proclaimed “Material Gworl” has completely blown up since going mainstream in recent years. Although many may know him as being Yung Miami’s ride-or-die, 31-year-old Santana has captured the eyes and ears of this generation with his catchy, twerk-worthy music. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the Florida transplant obtained global stardom through bops like “Material Girl,” “Walk,” and “Booty,” featuring fellow rapper Latto. Santana is loud and proud about being gay, which is one of the reasons why he’s so respected and admired in the field.

Hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Poison Ivi is the oldest daughter of famed rapper Boosie Badazz. However, she has since put herself on the map, making moves as a rising lyricist with her own unique style. With over 1 million followers across social media (collectively), the 22-year-old has utilized her digital platforms to document her journey and solidify her position as one of the most gifted female emcees among Generation Z. With tracks like “All My Truths,” “Collide,” “Human Too,” and a slew of freestyles, Ivi has proven that she’s the epitome of young greatness. She is (seemingly) a lesbian and creates content with her girlfriend, Jordy, on their YouTube couples channel.

Kandie (aka JayWill)

You may have grown familiar with Kandie (aka JayWill) through Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood or Wild N Out. The celebrated rhymer, comedian, and internet star first made waves as an openly bisexual rapper. Kandie’s unprecedented, no-holds-barred approach to the hip-hop space has (undoubtedly) set the Compton, California native apart from the rest. Coming in hot with songs like “BUSS DOWN” and “Humpy Dumpty,” it goes without saying that the influencer’s bar level is unparalleled. Aside from music, Kandie designs wigs and clothes and has built an uber-successful pickle kit business.

Siya

With over a decade in rap, Brooklyn’s finest, Siya, is in a lane of her own. The 37-year-old was initially signed by R&B icon Tank and from there, her career skyrocketed. These days, the New Yorker has spread her wings and expanded her craft. From rhyming and singing to writing and acting, Siya is truly a force to be reckoned with. The former Sisterhood of Hip Hip cast member has collaborated with many industry heavy hitters, including Chris Brown, Sage the Gemini, and more. Some of her most notable, earlier work includes “Heaven,” One Hunnid,” and “Real MVP.” Siya identifies as lesbian.

A post shared by Key Hood (@rollitupk)

K’Hood rose to online prominence as a comedienne/food reviewer. She has since amassed over 4 million followers on TikTok, with her audience on Instagram and TikTok bringing her to an estimated 7 million across all channels. Aside from her hilarious taste-testing content, the Birmingham, Alabama native found success as an independent rapper. The 26-year-old is famous for her hits “Deleon,” “Sexyy Red,” and “Mack,” among others. K’Hood is a lesbian and (as of late) incorporates her girlfriend, Ty, in some of her videos.
