So, you want to start a band? Maybe it’s just for fun. Or maybe you’d like to see the project grow into something more.

No matter what your ultimate vision is, starting and maintaining a band is quite an achievable goal with the right amount of planning.

One of the biggest obstacles you’ll face is funding. Let’s be honest, it’s not the cheapest of hobbies or career path, especially when you’re first starting out. But it doesn’t have to break the bank.

Check out these five tips for starting and maintaining a band on a budget.

1. Buy Secondhand Equipment

You and your fellow musicians must have the right equipment to build your band, from the instruments you play to the amps you use. You can find secondhand equipment at a great price (or even free) if you know where to look.

Whether you need cheap drum heads that sound great or a new guitar, the internet will be a helpful resource in your search. Find people who are selling or giving away equipment that they no longer need and check out music websites that offer used gear.

2. Create a Recording Space at Home

It is every musician’s dream to record their music in the glamour and gleam of a professional recording studio. But that great setup also comes with an expensive hourly fee. In the meantime, you can create a quality recording space at home.

For a simple, low-budget home studio, you will need a few things:

  • First, dedicate a private room for this venture if you can.
  • Add some acoustic panels to create better sound quality.
  • Then, bring in your recording equipment and get to work.

As your band grows, you can upgrade this initial set up.

3. Always Backup Your Work

Always, always, ALWAYS back up your work. This is true for any digital medium, but especially music production. Imagine spending hours creating the perfect tracks and putting them together, just to lose your work because you forgot to save it.

As you write new music, keep a detailed record of your creative process. This way, you can look back on it later. You may need inspiration! It will also allow you to develop a more consistent method.

4. Budget Effectively for Gigs or Tours

Once you establish yourself as an up-and-coming local group, start thinking about a first tour. Start small, of course. Maybe a few local cities near you. No need to go across the country quite yet.

Most beginning bands plan out every element of the tour themselves, from hotel accommodations to travel arrangements to everything in between.

As you plan your travels, remember to budget ahead of time and stick to it. Make sure that what you plan to spend on touring is equal to or less than what venues pay you to play.

5. Use Targeted Promotional Techniques

Last but not least, remember to promote your group. Social media is a great strategy for creating a buzz about your band. You share group shots, album artwork, and connect with new fans.

If you haven’t done so already, set up a Facebook and Instagram account for your band. You can add other sites as well. Use these platforms to connect with fans, tell them about upcoming performances, sell merchandise, and more.

In addition to free promotion, don’t be afraid to look into traditional advertising routes, such as print and TV. Although they aren’t free, a smart and targeted campaign will boost your visibility.

Conclusion

These are just a few pointers for maintaining a band on a budget that will help you save money while doing what you love. And remember, remember to invest some of it back into the band as you grow your group!
