Hooking Up. How do you define it? Is it simply making out, maybe something further like third base? Is it going all the way? I personally think of it as making out maybe something further but definitely not sex.  When I’m gossiping with my friends, if I did more I would let them know I did more.
Walking around, watching television, talking with your own friends, it seems that everyone has their own way of defining these ambiguous words. What seems evident about the simple two words is that you’re definitely not in a relationship. Friends, friends that are more than friends, simply friends with benefits but definitely not boyfriend/girlfriend. Why do we scoff at the idea of lasting romance that not too long ago seemed to appeal to every girl who dreamed of finding her prince charming. Now the new lasting trend seems to be looking for a hook up and turning down romance and serious relationships. Everyone seems to want to be single and hooking up is just part of the package.
Is it television, movies and tabloids that are parading these sexually bold characters that have altered the way we view relationships? Do the temporary relationships of the Taylors, Lindsays, and Selenas actually have an influence on the way people in the real world date? I guess it’s not that they specifically and blatantly instruct people on how to date, but they seem to set the norms for relationships.
I want to know if these ‘temporary relationships’ are just that temporary because it’s more fun without the strings, it’s what the famous people do or are times just changing. This girl I went to school with gave blow jobs in stairwells and would sext with various guys. It’s like she wanted everyone to know and think she was cool because she was never discreet about her business. She was never embarrassed, and I guess deep down I was more embarrassed for her. She felt important, significant, like she mattered and I suppose she wanted and needed the validation. She was forever infamous, everyone knew who she was, what she did, and they always spoke about her.
I think she thought she had guts, but with everything there are costs. People assume that their cell phones and the web are totally private, but how will these ‘in the moment’ acts like sexting affect their lives later. I don’t remember how many times I’ve heard stories of guys blackmailing girls with naked pictures, or how many times pictures of naked girls have gone viral via bitter ex boyfriends.
Overall I’m guessing as we evolve and technology continues to evolve with us and change our lives, all aspects of our lives will change. We can communicate with anyone around the world in seconds which creates this sense of impersonal and aloof relationships that can start and end quickly. Things are changing and we’ll continue to understand and question our lives as get older. Nevertheless, I don’t think we should disregard romance and love just yet.
