Suburban Noise Hip-Hop recording artist Saigon released his debut album this month, The Greatest Story Never Told. Like many up and coming artists, Saigon first made a name for himself and built a large fan base by releasing mixtapes. His guest appearances on HBO’s hit TV series, Entourage helped to further his exposure. After being released from a recording contract that he signed with Atlantic Records back in 2004, he teamed up with music Producer Just Blaze to create a brilliant debut album.
If you have an appreciation for Hip-Hop, you recognize a real artist when you see and hear one. When you listen to The Greatest Story Never Told, you instantly come to the conclusion that Saigon is the truth. A product of the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York, a place that many refer to as “Vietnam”, he’s a gifted wordsmith, depicting real life events, not a spectator.
On the track The Invitation, Saigon is the self proclaimed voice of urban youth, detailing their daily struggles to survive within their toxic environment. Having been incarcerated himself, Saigon tells it like it is, without the sugar coating. The track Believe It, with its catchy hook and melodic beat is one of the most personal songs on the album. Saigon raps about what the music industry is really like and his determination to stay true to who he is. He prides himself as being an artist who actually loves the music and although he understands that it is a business, “It will never consume me and make me a wack artist trying to come up with a gimmick or an image.” he says.
Another notable song on the album is Come On Baby, where Saigon showcases his lyrical prowess. Jay-Z’s appearance on this song is not overshadowing to Saigon’s verse. This underlines the fact that Saigon can hold his own ground amongst his peers. The album also features guest appearances by Q-Tip, Layzie Bone and Bun B. and is a must have for all Hip-Hop fans.
Despite controversial production conflicts that delayed its release for several years, The Greatest Story Never Told is an album that remains relevant. With that said, Saigon has proven himself to be an artist that is way ahead of his time.
