There’s something about Drake’s Take Care that just doesn’t seem to display what Thank Me Later displayed. While it was known that Drake went on a journey to make it distinctively different – it is hard not to compare the two projects. The Degrassi character turned rapper vacillates between rhymes that prove he has the dynamic skill to exhibit on the mic and a mushy romantic who colors outside of the R&B lines with overdone crooning.
Running at 72 minutes, give or take a few seconds, Take Care, deals the listener 17 songs. The best journal entry on the scribed album, “Over My Dead Body,” embodies the same formula that worked well on “Fireworks.” Its production is surreal, with Drake freestyling around a sound that finds it way to being repeated. From there it’s a rollercoaster ride of hodge podge music.
While it was commendable for Drake to try and show off his singing ability, it takes away from the fact that he actual can deliver seriously thought out verses. Take Care is not all bad, though –  “Headlines,” shoots for the same surefire swish that “Over” delivered and scores, while  “Make Me Proud,” stands out as a masterpiece on the cd with Nicki Minaj delivering the same intensity that she enacted on Kanye West’s “Monster.”
Take Care is certainly an interesting approach to the musical genre that is hip hop. Whether it goes down as a classic; only time will tell. But it might not be the best thing to take the champagne glasses out and clink them just yet.
