It’s Not So Bad After All

Every February 14th, across the United States and in other places around the world, couples get dressed up (or undressed) to enjoy a day of showering one another with gifts, candy, flowers and romance. It’s a day to reconnect or connect for the first time with someone you love, care about or are interested in. This February 14th, some couples will get engaged, get married, hook up, have sex for the first time or have sex for the one-thousandth time. It all depends on your personal relationship status, that is, if you aren’t single on Valentine’s Day.

However, most people are not sure why they are actively participating in this “day of love.” The reality is that for most of us we simply just enjoy the tradition of it… so we play along. No matter your reason for celebrating Valentine’s Day, it remains an awesome holiday to share with the person who owns your heart.

Conversely, while happy couples are basking in a variety of love expressions being shared on Valentine’s Day, there are millions of single people having a very different experience.  If you don’t have anyone to share Valentine’s Day with, you must find creative ways to past the time.  It is important that you know however, that you are not alone. In fact, the reality is quite the opposite! There are several surprising statistics about single life in America, including:

  • There are 96.6 million unmarried Americans 18 and older. That’s 43 percent of all U.S. residents 18 and older.
  • 53% of unmarried Americans 18 and older are women.
  • 61% of unmarried Americans 18 and older have never been married. Another 24 percent were divorced, and 15 percent were widowed.
  • 16.2 million unmarried Americans are 65 and older. These older Americans comprised 17 percent of all unmarried and single people 18 and older.
  • Fellas’ check out this interesting little nugget! There are only 88 single men for every 100 single women in the United States.

Given these staggering statistics, it’s clear that single people should not avoid this awesome holiday. In fact, singles should embrace Valentine’s as a great opportunity to celebrate themselves, their freedom and their lifestyle. Here are 5 simple ways that you can enjoy the holiday if you are single on Valentine’s Day…

1. Love yourself. You do not need someone to validate you.  You possess everything you need to be happy.  Therefore, love yourself and be your own Valentine.  It may sound strange but I firmly believe that “self love” is the key to having a successful relationship.  People must learn to first love themselves before they can love someone else.  So buy yourself a special gift, get your hair done, read a novel while sipping a glass of wine, etc. Take the time to invest in yourself as a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day!

2. Exchange Gifts With Friends.  The most sincere expression of love is to do something special for another person.  Selflessness enriches the soul and connects you to the universe.  A great Valentine’s Day tradition could be for single friends to get together and exchange gifts.  The gifts should cost less than $30.  The idea is not to buy happiness but to spread happiness.  Also, you’ll find yourself having fun as you go shopping for your gift exchange party.  It’s also a lot of fun to anticipate what someone is getting for you and then sharing that experience with others.

3. Get dressed up & Go out! Always remember that there is a big world out there and you deserve to enjoy it.  Don’t deny yourself a fun night by staying home and going to bed early and alone.  You work hard… so play harder.  Put on the outfit that makes you look your best and go out and show yourself off.  Whether you decide to go dancing, shopping, eating, wine tasting, partying, etc, make sure you lose yourself in the atmosphere. In fact, the more fun you have, increases your desirability and thus your odds of making a sexy Valentine’s Day connection.

4. Movie Nights are always fun. Whether you watch movies alone or with a group, it’s a great way to take focus away from not being in a relationship. However, stick to Comedies and/or Action Adventure movies.  I don’t recommend watching a dramatic love story on Valentine’s Night.

5. Spend Time With Family.  The bible teaches us that love begins at home.  This is particularly true on Valentine’s.  Oftentimes we forget to buy Valentine’s Day cards for our family members like, Mom, Dad, Sisters and Brothers.  Also, if you no longer live home, then stop by and see your parents’ and/or siblings.  Valentine’s love is not only about romance.  It’s about connecting with the ones that we love on any level.

I hope these ideas were helpful to you. Remember, single life can be just as fulfilling as being in a relationship. It’s all about having the right attitude.  So perk up even if you are single on Valentine’s Day.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
