The plight of the American work spirit has been down in recent years. Many American jobs are now overseas and anyone who’s willing to put in hard work anymore. The company may be here but the product that’s being produced isn’t. It seems like the work ethic of yesteryear no longer exists, many people want the money from working but don’t want to put in the actual work to earn it.
Robert Brumfield is a man with a vision and not only a vision but a product that’ll change the world for the better. His dream required a sense of patience that a lot of people would’ve lacked in the beginning, especially if they didn’t see a payday from it coming soon.
Robert is a Washington DC native. After coming home in 1972, Robert enjoyed his brief boxing career while also working part time as a construction worker. “Several local fighters including Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes and Johnny Gant enticed me to come out of retirement which I did in 1975.” It was also in the year of 1972, when he came home that he would receive a revelation that would inspire him to change the world of sports and physical fitness. “When I received this revelation, I had no clue or idea as to what it was all about. However eventually, the Almighty revealed to me secrets of the project and enabled me to get a patent in 1994.” During this time, Robert was having difficulties bringing his vision to light such as bringing in investors and marketing it towards the African-American community. It wasn’t until he was able to meet India Alston of B.E.A.M. Marketing and Management, LLC. that he was able to finally get his dream off the ground.
What was his dream you may ask? Robert’s dream is to promote physical fitness even for those who might’ve never played a sport in their life would be able to use his machine. Brute Strength Competition machine has several different mechanisms that allow people to use both their upper and lower body strength: the competition starts at the center of the apparatus, before the game begins the referee will strap the competitors in their seats with a foot holder which is connected to a bar rail in between the foot holder. The machine itself is 10ft x 40-50in, although sizes may vary depending on location. There is an action bar that allows the competitors to use both upper and lower body strength to pull the bars. “It’s a modern day tug of war,” says Robert, “The machine helps promote endurance as well as good health and good eating, even for those who aren’t physically active can get in on those.” The competitors never physically touch each other as the machine will do all the work. Even before competition, competitors will have to be licensed to compete. In competition, there will be several weight classes separating competitors as well as a governing body of judges to watch over the competition.
Robert’s dream is not only to bring this machine to the people, but also to introduce it as an Olympic Sport in the possible future so that other countries will have an opportunity to participate in this sport.  “This sport is so extremely unique. Anyone can participate in this from those who are active to the non-active and even the handicap will be able to take part in this.” Says Robert.  His vision of Brute Strength Competition will not only promote a healthy and active living but also give jobs to those involved. “People involved in Brute Strength Competition will be able to earn just as much as any pro athlete out there today.” Robert’s dream gives the average person a chance to become a sports superstar just like LeBron James or Terrell Owens.
It’s no secret that our country’s physical fitness has gone down the drain, we are one of, if not the most obese nation in the world. Many of our citizens suffer from illnesses brought on by an inactive lifestyle and poor dieting. With the introduction of Robert’s Strength Training Competition to the general market could allow a person of any size, gender or race no matter how active (or inactive) their particular lifestyle may be to become active in a sport. Not everyone can run a touchdown, hit a homerun or slam dunk and with this new device available to the public, anyone can become the next sports star.  The goal isn’t just to promote active and healthy living even though it’s a big part of it; Robert hopes to help build jobs in the African-American community and the nation overall.
What makes Robert’s story even more interesting is that he was made two extraordinary offers to sell his invention and the average person would’ve gladly taken and called it a day. Locked up in 1993, Robert filed for patent on his idea and it wasn’t even after a week after receiving his patent that the American Institute of Research and Technology made Robert an offer for $50 Million to sell them the right to what would become Brute Strength Competition, which he turned down. Why? As Robert simply put it, “Something of this magnitude was too big to simply just give away.” His second offer came in 2001 from a millionaire; Robert never officially met him but he did send his people to offer Robert $150 Million.  “I requested a percentage of ownership of the project but he wasn’t interested in anything but just giving me the money.” Robert turned down this offer. When asked if he had to think about turning down offers twice, Robert explains, “The reason I turned down the money was because I was given this vision by the Almighty to help the community and not just myself. I didn’t want to just be the one getting money from this.”
Robert offers words of advice to fellow entrepreneurs and inventors: “Stay true to your dreams and do not let them die.”
Robert’s vision has gone from an idea to the verge of being a physical entity but it didn’t happen overnight. The long time coming that Robert has experienced thus far, many people would’ve most likely given up a long time ago if they couldn’t see an end to it. His perseverance and determination is an inspiration to us all.  This is a man with the vision to see his dream come to life. With people like Robert dreaming of the ways of tomorrow, we can certainly trust that the future of the American work spirit is in brighter hands.

Adrian "A.D." Dubard

Born in Washington DC, Adrian was placed in the care of his maternal grandparents after his mother died when he was a baby. For the most part of his life, Adrian’s biological father was absent from his life. Growing up with a house full of cousins, aunts and uncles, Adrian began his love of writing to document his surroundings. Attending a private school for 9 ½ years, it was there that many influential teachers help strengthen his love of writing via English and creative writing classes. Even though, Adrian loved to write he was reserved about what he wrote about. Leaving DC at the age of 7, Adrian and his family moved to Temple Hills, Maryland in Prince George’s not too far from where he had lived previously. Luckily, Adrian had taken part in many youth outreach programs as a youth that allowed him to travel and see the country, many kids he knew around his own age hadn’t even left the city. These experiences opened his eyes to other cultures and ways of living. As a teenager, Adrian had many friends who passed away before their time but he promised to keep writing to honor their memory. Other than writing, Adrian has helped various charities rise by going on public speaking tours. Some of these charities include The Safe Haven Project and The Journey of Hope. He has contributed to several book projects and currently resides in Queens, NY. Read more articles by Adrian.
