Texas-born rapper, T-Wayne, has made quite a name for himself with the weekly releases of his videos and his hit track “Nasty Freestyle.” Born Tyshon Dwayne Nobles, T-Wayne has managed to reach the Top 10 on the Billboard Singles chart, all while remaining true to himself and his music. The artist has signed a record deal 300 Entertainment, home to Fetty Wap and Young Thug among others, and has over six million views on his YouTube video for “Nasty Freestyle.” His debut mixtape, Who Is Rickey Wayne? is buzzing and his weekly videos are becoming infectious. The MC took some time out to speak with Parlé Magazine about his life, new success and aspiring future career.
Parlé Magazine: Tell us a little background information about yourself for those who may not be familiar with who you are?
T-Wayne: My name is T-Wayne, my real name is Tyshon Dwayne and I’m from Abilene, Texas. I moved to Dallas when I was about 15, and I moved to Houston when I was 19. I am 24 years old. I love to dance, and I love to make music. Music is my passion. I love my fans, meeting new people and hopping out of Porsches. I’m doing very nice things right now.
Parlé: Being that you are only 24 years old, has music always been your passion? What made you want to pursue music?
T-Wayne: I’ve always been into music. Since I was young, my dad would get the little DVDs of different rappers and watching them is what made me take rap seriously. I use to watch the DVDs over and over and think if they can do this why don’t I try and do it too. I started freestyle battling in the 6th grade. My whole school would gather around, and everyone would battle, and I was always losing. When I moved to Dallas, I started to get better, and I started winning. Once I started winning, people started to notice who I was.
Parlé: What things in your life, up to this point, have transformed you into the artist you are today
T-Wayne: Growing up, I played football, and when I decided to stop to focus more on my career, my coach told me I would never be a rapper. At one time, I had three jobs trying my best to support myself, and I just got sick and tired of working. I promised myself that I was never going to work another day in my life. I never wanted to have to work three jobs to pay off my car note and be comfortable. I decided to quit my job and focus solely on my music. I didn’t have any money to support myself at first, but after a while I started to make money off my music. When the money started to roll in, I took my career even more seriously. I started writing for different artists and doing everything I could in this industry to keep the money going.
Parlé: When it comes to your fans, what is one thing you want your fans to grasp from your music and career?
T-Wayne: I want my fans to know that I’m a cool and fun person. I want them to know that anything you put your mind to, you can do it no matter what anybody has to say and no matter what anybody does, you can do it. I want my fans to take my career and me serious. I know I play around a lot with my songs, but I am here. A lot of people looked over me in the past and now look where I am.
Parlé: Did you expect “Nasty Freestyle” to blow up the way that it did?
T-Wayne: No, not at all. I made the song with no intention of releasing it. It wasn’t until a friend of mine said we should make a video to it. Once the video went viral, people went crazy over it. They kept asking, “what’s that’s song, what’s that song?” I honestly didn’t even promote the video. As soon as I put it out, the video got about 10,000 hits the first day.
Parlé: Who are the major support systems in your life? Who are the people pushing you to continue to be successful?
T-Wayne: My friends are a huge part of my life, and they help me with everything. If I didn’t have them, I would probably be going down the wrong path. They help me out with a lot of my decisions that I make. There are some things I create, that may be really good, and I might not like it and my friends talk me into liking it and believing in it. They play a major role in everything that I do. My family also supports everything that I do. Every single move I make, I tell them about it to get their feedback. Every interview, every performance, I make sure to tell them about it so they can see it and see me. My family is my biggest supporters.
Parlé: Are working on an album or anything else major right now?
T-Wayne: I am working on the album right now. I pretty much have all of the songs done, but I still need to have the label hear all of them. The majority of the songs are great, and I’m sure they are going to like them. The album is going to be a totally different feel from what people are expecting. It is going to be a little crossover between the material I came out with meaning the dance hits and just good music. It’s going to be something you can vibe to.
Parlé: So far as producing is concerned, have you produced any of the songs on the upcoming album and are you interested in possibly producing some track in the future?
T-Wayne: When it comes to my music, I’m heavily involved. I don’t play any instruments, but I am there when the producers are creating the hit. I definitely provide my insight on how I think things should sound and where the certain sounds should go. I have learned how to chop up beats and make them sound completely different from the original sound. For example, on “Nasty Freestyle,” I moved beats around so when the beat dropped at the beginning of the song it just sounded great.
Parlé: Do you have any last words for your fans? Anything they should keep an eye out for?
T-Wayne: I drop a music video once a week. They should check out my YouTube channel to see all my past videos and the new ones I put up. Some of my videos have a kind of “day-in-the-life” feel. Tune into my YouTube channel to see all of that good stuff.
