Self-Care During Self-Quarantine

Since the sudden and rapid outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and a nation-wide mandate ordering us to go into immediate self-quarantine, many of us are unsure as to what to do and how to spend our time during this social-distancing phase.  With limited interaction from other people, what better time is there to take a moment for yourself and practice the art of self-care.

Self-care is the practice of incorporating basically anything that is good for you into your daily routine that will enable you to recharge mentally, physically, and spiritually – all of which can help to create the greatest version of yourself.  With the tips below on how to incorporate self-care into your daily routine, our hope is that you come out of this self-quarantine with a new outlook on life and an improved mind, body, and soul.

  • Meditate

Although the art of meditation has been around for centuries, only in recent years have we started to really hear about it and take part in it.  However, when one thinks of self-care, one might think of meditation. Meditation allows you to focus solely on the moment and appreciate the beauty around you in a world full of chaos – a shift in your mindset will take place and you will begin to transition into an overall calmness; have renewed energy; and improved sleep.

  • Yoga

While exercise in general is a great way to improve self-care, yoga can be especially effective in that it calms the mind, while at the same time benefiting the body.  While practicing yoga, you will learn to have controlled breathing, which can aid in reducing stress. Yoga can also help with weight management, flexibility, and improved posture. So, what are you waiting for? Find an open space in your home and grab that yoga mat to start getting in touch with your true self.  Alternatively, there are other sports and exercises you can do indoors with the help of different devices such as home golf simulators, treadmills, and gym equipment pieces.

  • Journaling

Journaling allows you to put all of your thoughts in one place.  Use this idle time for self-reflection and to help you work through any stress and bottled up emotions that you may have.  Writing these thoughts down on paper will help to free the mind and identify how you can tackle any challenges that you may be experiencing at the moment.  Moreover, consider starting a journal that focuses on the positives – challenge yourself to write down the positive things, in which you are thankful for.

  • Focus on Sleep

One of the most challenging, yet much needed forms of self-care, is getting adequate sleep.  Ensuring that you get enough sleep plays an important role in your health and overall well-being.  With that being said, it is essential that you get plenty of it – I know, I know easier said than done, but consider setting a strict bedtime schedule for yourself.  While it may be tempting to stay up later than usual and binge watch your favorite TV series on Netflix because you’re now working from home, start by going to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, keeping in mind the benefits: increased energy levels, less fatigue, healthy skin, and reduced stress.

  • Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet as we all know is essential to having a healthy lifestyle.  Too much unhealthy eating can leave you feeling tired and bloated. The occasional odd treat, such as your favorite ice-cream or chocolate bar is okay to have every now and then but consider adding healthy foods into your diet like fruits and vegetables – all of which can be blended into a smoothie.  The Little Epicurean has some great fruit and veggie smoothie ideas.

There are many other self-care activities that you can incorporate into your daily routine that can help improve your personal development; however, those mentioned above may be five of the easiest tips to start without becoming overwhelmed.
