Will you be one of the 37.5 million Americans traveling for the Fourth of July weekend? Do you have concrete plans or are you unsure of what to do given the current world climate?

Though the pandemic has put a damper on summer travel plans, you can still have fun. Whether you’re heading out on Independence Day weekend or looking for tips on how to spend your days off this summer, we have your back. Keep reading to find our six ideas for a fun getaway to ensure you’ll still have an amazing summer.

  1. Day Trip to the Lake

Is there anything better than spending a scorching hot summer day at the lake? Whether you’re going with a group of friends or your spouse and children, everyone loves the lake.

Go fishing or swimming. Pack an umbrella, bring a picnic basket, and choose a spot on the lake to settle in for the day. Don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen so you can safely soak up some Vitamin D.

If you enjoy being on the water, bring a raft, paddleboard, or kayak. Consider investing in a few novelty inflatables for the little one. Learn more about inflatable water trampolines as they are always a hit with children.

  1. Take a Hike

Hiking is one of the most exciting hobbies you can take up. It’s great exercise, where you can burn hundreds of calories per hour. Plus, spending time in nature has a whole host of science-backed health-boosting benefits.

There are over 63,000 hiking trails listed on the All Trails website waiting for you to explore them. Whether you want a quick one-hour round-trip walk or a grueling full-day adventure, you can find it online.

Research before you head out for the trails, so you know what to expect. You’ll want to ensure you’re prepared for what the hike will entail.

Pack a lot of water, energy-boosting foods, and several layers of clothing. Don’t forget to wear hiking shoes, preferably ones you’ve already broken in.

  1. Go Camping

A weekend in the woods disconnected from the world may be what you need this summer.

You have several options depending on how much you plan to rough it.

You can buy a tent and pitch it in the woods or at a campground. Inspect your tent before setting it up to avoid a wet surprise on the first rainy day. Make sure to pack enough clothing to stay warm as the evenings can often get chilly.

You can also rent an RV, travel trailer, or even a cabin in the woods. This is an excellent choice for folks not ready to say goodbye to modern conveniences yet.

Meld tent camping and the luxuries of a travel trailer by going glamping. Glamping allows you to enjoy nature without forfeiting the creature comforts of home. Imagine waking up in a yurt lit by fairy lights in a cozy queen-sized bed.

  1. Visit a State Park

National parks often get all the attention, but their state counterparts can be just as fun. There’s something that everyone in the family will enjoy.

Active families can choose to go cycling, hiking, or even rock climbing in some parks. Wildlife aficionados can view animals in their natural habitat or go birding. Water lovers can try fishing, paddling, or boating on the lakes or rivers in the park.

Visiting a local park is a great way to learn more about the history of the region. Your curious children might enjoy learning how the park came to be.

Use the Find a Park function on the State Parks website to find one in your area. Once you’ve chosen where to go, be sure to visit the park’s website. Some may not be operating at full capacity during the pandemic.

  1. Book a Staycation

If your pocketbook is feeling the effects of the pandemic, you may not be able to travel far from home. The good news is, you don’t have to leave your hometown to have a relaxing vacation.

A staycation is a great way to boost the local economy and feeling like you’re taking a holiday. Spend a weekend in a local upscale hotel and indulge in all the available amenities.

Book an in-room massage, order in-room dining, and sip cocktails on your balcony. Resist the urge to turn on the television or bring your phone with you. Take the time to disconnect from the real world just for a weekend.

Visit local sights that are popular with tourists. Go to the museum or zoo, try a new restaurant, or take a walk downtown. Treat yourself to a souvenir sweater or new coffee mug while you’re at it, too.

  1. Host a Potluck Dinner

Although getting out of the city is nice, it may not be realistic in our current world climate. That doesn’t mean you still can’t have fun with your loved ones at home. If you’ve expanded your social circles beyond your household, consider throwing a potluck.

You can still practice social distancing if you have a big enough home. If the weather is nice, host the party outside to make distancing easier.

Invite a handful of your closest friends and family members. Ask everyone to bring a favorite dish to share with the crowd.

Assign guests categories of food to avoid having ten desserts and no sides. You’ll need appetizers, easy-to-share main courses like chili, desserts, and beverages.

Use a website like Perfect Potluck to stay organized as you plan your party.
