OWN’s Critically Acclaimed Series, Queen Sugar Returns This June

Season one of OWN’s Queen Sugar drama series premiered in September of last year, bringing in over a million viewers each episode. The season, which carried a total of thirteen episodes, aired two months straight and received loads of great feedback. Queen Sugar even did so well that it won an award for ‘Outstanding Drama Series’ at 2017’s NAACP Image Awards. Now, the Queen Sugar saga continues. The hour-long series will be making its season two debut on Tuesday, June 21st, and Wednesday, June 22nd, for a two-night premiere event.

Created and executive produced by award-winning director and screenwriter Ava DuVernay, Queen Sugar is based on the same-titled novel written by Natalie Baszile. The series, set in the fictional town of Saint Josephine, Louisiana, follows the lives of three estranged siblings, Nova Bordelon (Rutina Wesley), Charley Bordelon (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe). After tragically losing their father, the family is faced with the many trials and tribulations of their own lives while trying to uphold their father’s legacy by keeping his struggling sugarcane farm afloat. As seen in season one, the siblings come to realize, in season two, that they have to learn to rely on each other as they must ‘navigate their tenuous bonds as family’.

While you may have thought season one was drama-filled, season two is coming heavier and harder. After the two-night premiere event, the series will go back to its normal schedule, which is Wednesday nights at 10/9c on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network).

Queen Sugar is produced for OWN by Warner Horizon Scripted Television, and also has Oprah Winfrey and Monica Macer serving as two of its executive producers.

Additionally, episodes of the complete season one of Queen Sugar will be available for streaming on HULU beginning April 21st.
