On DJ Khaled latest record “I’m on One”, Drake semi sings “I’ma sip until I feel it, I’ma smoke it till it’s done/And I don’t really give a f-ck, and my excuse is that I’m young…”
Alcoholic?
I added that last part and it’s no reference to Drake but could be said about the 14 million people battling alcoholism in the United States. I am not a drinker nor a smoker and perhaps I’m naive to the “high” feelings that comes with not remembering what occurred the night before and such fun that it is. However, it is fair to say that we’ve all witnessed plenty of lows and its effect on families (see Intervention on A&E).
Most recent is the death of Ryan Dunn of the outrageously funny (depending on your humor) show, Jackass. A night on the town ended in a tragic fashion when Dunn’s car slammed into a tree bursting into a fireball, where alcohol appears to be a factor. R & B singer Nivea, best known for being Lil’ Wayne’s baby mother and The Dream’s ex-wife was allegedly arrested in Atlanta for driving under the influence recently as well. Lindsay Lohan has yet to regain her notoriety since becoming intertwined in the world of alcoholism/addiction.
Alcohol is prominent in the entertainment realm where a lot of industry parties are sponsored by such companies. Our favorite artists tell us to ‘Say Aah’ and ‘Bottoms Up’ when drinking, and if having a night filled with regrets just ‘Blame it on the Alcohol’. To make things clear, I am not blaming Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop, which I love, is a genre that often receives the most flack but let’s face it, it is the most influential. Do we have a case of life imitating art or art imitating life? Who knows? But I do know lives are being destroyed due to over consumption of liquid fuel. Something’s gotta give or we’ll have more bodies in the bottom of the ground with souls rising up.
Please drink responsibly.
