Nicki Minaj and Quavo Play For "Keeps" in Vibrant Throwback to the 1980s

The collaborative efforts of Nicki Minaj and Quavo have been steadily gaining momentum, and with the release of smooth banger “She For Keeps”, the duo show no signs of stopping.

“She For Keeps'” is the second joint effort by Minaj and Quavo, with the first being Top 10 hit “MotorSport”. The duo was joined on the track by the remaining members of Migos; Offset and Takeoff, as well as “Bartier Cardi” herself, Cardi B. The “MotorSport” video provided fans with a imaginative, futuristic journey accompanied by memorable verses from all involved.

The ‘Quavo and Queen’ duo teased fans via Instagram during the making of the single. Minaj assured fans that it would be their new favorite song even though they “hadn’t heard it yet”. The single was released by Quality Control in December, which is easily one of the standout sounds on the 30 track Control The Streets Vol. 1 mixtape.

Quavo further fueled anticipation by posting a photo featuring Minaj in a 1950s style diner. The photo, displayed the two rappers sharing dinner, loving glances and a warm embrace. In true Quavo fashion, the photo only donned the caption “F O R K E E P S”, leaving fans to speculate everything from potential new music to their perspective relationship statuses.

The visual, much like the audio, provides a smooth, mellow departure from its predecessor “MotorSport”. Brimming with upbeat colors and childhood references, ‘She For Keeps’ takes the audience on a Nostalgic journey that will undoubtedly remind fans and critics alike of a simpler time.

Opening with image of a cassette player, the lavish vibe soon becomes apparent as Quavo croons over the beginning of the track. The camera pans the room, revealing that the audience has taken their first step into Minaj & Quavo’s time machine. Retro fashions soon fill the screen, complete with side ponytails, buoyant patterns and bright eyeshadow. Quavo even participates in the dress code, crooning with finesse while donning an open clock neon shirt, flip- up glasses, and a bright green fanny pack.

Minaj enters the video in true Onika fashion. Preforming her braggadocio, yet melodious verse, Minaj is clearly in her element. Rocking a blonde wig and metallic lingerie, Minaj shows why she’s for ‘Keeps’. Soft pink lighting covers the room as she fearlessly delivers lines like

These b****** can’t see me, they should all be reading braille/

Pull off in that GT with some Seagram’s Ginger Ale/

Tell that bitch I’m Oprah, she couldn’t even be Gayle/

Further expanding the time loop, the next scene shows Minaj and Quavo in a scene identical to Huncho’s Instagram post. Minaj boldly raps as they couple perch in the Pink Cadillac booth seats reminiscent of a 1950s diner. The scene is complete with red – lipped waitresses and malt milkshakes. Quavo regains the reigns in the final scene of the video, which shows the rap duo in a flying car, donned with furs and suits. The playful, retro moment can be seen as an obvious homage to 1978’s Grease.

The laid back single and its visually pleasing aesthetic is a winning combo for Minaj and Quavo. It appears to fit into 2018s’ trend of nostalgia driven videos, and in that aspect ”She For Keeps” exceeds expectations.
