Beginning a new life in a new country can be intimidating. Culture shock is real, and many people can find it difficult to get out there and start getting to know their new home and the people who live there. With the help of these top tips, you will be able to fully immerse yourself in a new country from day one.

Choose The Right Accommodation

Whether you are planning to stay short or long-term, your accommodation choice is going to impact how successfully you will immerse yourself in a foreign nation and culture. Getting off the beaten track and staying in hotels or bed and breakfasts away from tourist hotspots is a good start. If you are staying in a new country for a longer period, your home needs to be in an area that offers amenities with a taste of the local life and culture.

PropertyGuru is a great place to go when you are looking for somewhere to live that is more authentic than a holiday rental or hotel. If you are looking for a room rental in Singapore, you can find plenty of options there no matter what style of home or type of area you are looking for. Living in private property is a great way to immerse yourself in a culture, and PropertyGuru can help you find the right one.

Everyday Activities Are Everyday Opportunities

Eating, drinking, and socializing all present opportunities to engage with local culture. Food shopping is the perfect example. Wandering through local markets and stores can introduce you to ingredients, snacks, and beverages that you have never seen or heard of before. Shopkeepers and market stall workers are always happy to offer advice and information too.

Going out to eat in restaurants and visiting bars helps you to meet new people and discover local traditions. You cannot fully appreciate a culture or a people from the window of a hotel room or holiday apartment, you have to get out there and join in the fun. Be open and inquisitive and try new dishes. You may feel out of your comfort zone, but you should embrace it. Whether popping into a shop for supplies or finding somewhere to eat lunch, you have an opportunity to learn and experience a new culture.

Learn And Teach

For a foreign traveler, one of the quickest ways to get to know a new culture is to learn the language. When you are ordering food in a restaurant, searching for a destination, or booking a ticket to an event, knowing the local lingo will help. People are much more helpful and receptive to travelers if they are speaking their language, or at least trying to.

If you are looking for a way to boost your budget on your travels, teaching your own language is a great way to do it. Even with very limited knowledge of the local dialect, you can still teach your language, and you will pick up a lot of the local words and phrases as you educate others. You can earn while you learn. If you are making an extended stay in a new country, this is highly recommended.

Follow Local Sports

If you want to meet new people, make new friends, and discover the traditions and culture of your new home you should follow a local sporting team. Sports events like football matches and athletics tournaments are a huge part of any culture and are filled with people who are ready to welcome a new fan no matter where they come from.

This may also be an opportunity to introduce yourself to a new sport. Global games like soccer and basketball can be found anywhere, but the further afield you go the more unique and interesting sports there are for you to discover. Following a team, wearing their shirt, and going to games is an exciting way to immerse yourself in a new culture and get to know new people. Check local listings and travel guides for information on stadiums and matchdays, and buy yourself a ticket to see your new favorite team.

Research Before You Travel

Before you make your trip, do as much research as you can on your destination. Knowledge truly is power. With a better idea of where you are going and the local customs, you can make plans for your arrival. Find out about local sports teams, markets, and any opportunities to teach your language.

Look for blogs from other travelers and ex-pats for tips and tricks to help make your first few days there easier. Try to build an itinerary for your first few weeks. You will be able to hit the ground running, and start immersing yourself in the culture straight away.

Follow these tips if you are traveling to a new land. Do not let yourself get stuck in your hotel room or apartment. Get out there! Enjoy the people, food, and music of your new home and build memories that will last a lifetime
