It takes a special kind of aplomb to hop on another rapper’s track. The courage needed is often dictated by the fame differential between the original and the newcomer: if both are equally famous, the second can feel free to step in, but better be swinging hard lest they look like a fool. If the freestyler is well below the other rapper’s radar, the pressure is off, and there is nothing to lose from putting a famous beat on your tape to build buzz. But when the second is just barely on the peripheral, jumping on another’s track can seem like a challenge.

One of the few female emcees who can match Nicki Minaj in precocity and fierce delivery, Iggy Azalea makes fine use of Minaj’s recent release on “Iggy In Moscow.” Azalea always sounds her best on aggressive, borderline abrasive tracks, whose loud, over-the-top presentation and fervent danceability plays well with her youthful energy. The outspoke Aussie uses her acid-spitting style to drop a few clever lines (“Had to address the nonsense/Here’s a postcard”), but her main accomplishment here is not getting buried under a busy track and the shadow of Minaj. While nothing groundbreaking, this important foray into the bad girl’s beats is a first step for Azalea, who we may be hearing a lot from shortly.
