But the job of a live dealer is, essentially, the same.

It’s a dealer’s responsibility to host a variety of games -Blackjack, Roulette, Poker, Baccarat- dealing cards, collecting chips and ensuring play is fair. This makes working as a dealer an exciting prospect for many, but how do you go about it?

Before we get into some top tips, the first asset you’ll require above all else is good old-fashioned patience. Not only will this stand you in good stead when you’re in the role, it will help you in these fledgling stages of your career.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, there are basic requirements expected of you before applying for the role of live dealer. If, at this stage, you can’t fulfil the following five requirements you’re better off doing something else…

You need to be over 21.

That’s not all, you need to be over 21 without any criminal convictions.

Good with Numbers

And by ‘good’ we’re talking excellent numeracy skills. You’ll be constantly required to add and subtract, so if you’re not number savvy, move on.

Be dextrous.

In training (further down the page) you’ll be taught practice routines to ensure your card-handling skills are nothing short of perfect. But if you’ve got two left hands you might want to reconsider your options.

Smart and Presentable

If you look like you’ve just got out of bed after a big night before, you’re going nowhere fast. Your appearance should reflect the pride you take in your work, so be smart.

Flexible working hours

It’s not a nine-to-five job, you’ll be expected to work both day and night shifts in the week, weekend, whenever. If you can’t commit to a flexible working schedule, then live dealing isn’t for you.

Excellent with people

It’s no good being a live dealer if you’re a mutterer who can’t hold eye contact. Your personality helps drive a game forward, ensuring that the players stay playing for as long as possible.

We’ve not put this at the end of this section because it’s of lesser importance than the former. In fact, it’s one of the most important aspects of your job as you’ll be working with a host of different people from around the world.

Indeed, if you can’t fulfil the above, then there is little point in continuing to the next section.

But assuming you can, we need to talk about getting you accepted onto a training course or taking a vocational examination. This is down to you to figure out as it depends on where you live/what the course offers. So, live casino courses/exams need to be researched -go online, check reviews- but they should, at least include the following four criteria:

Teaching the rules of the various games

In all honesty, you should already know these. But you’ll also need to learn the legal regulations of both a game and wider laws that revolve around gambling.

Honing skills

You’ll be taught how to handle your cards like a pro, shuffling and dealing and so on. Plus, further training to ensure your people skills are second to none: you’re in the entertainment business after all!

There are a bunch of professional dealers’ lounges that offer invaluable tips and advice you’ll be expected to engage with. Once you’ve listened and learned, you’ll be ready to take the next step.

Get Licensed

When you’re good and ready, most casinos require the live dealer to have a license or a gaming permit. The type you’ll require -if at all-will depend on the casino or the country in question.

These can be obtained by completing a regulated course or passing an examination. And while not all casinos required you to have a licence/permit, having one increases your chances of getting paid more!

So, there’s your basic guide to being a live dealer, but we’re not quite done yet. Global rules and regulations vary hugely when it comes to casinos, in some countries they’re illegal, period…

…But the same countries, while having a blanket ban on land casinos, might permit online casinos. Also, bear in mind that these laws can change from province to state etc.

Finally, the online casino industry is growing rapidly, which means there are more prospects for live dealers than ever. Therefore, it’s fair to say that if you have the basic skills and the necessary drive to become a live dealer, there’s nothing stopping you.
