HBO Continuing The Development of the Show 'Confederate'

It seems as if HBO is telling people to bring on the outrage as it continues the development of the show Confederate.

In a recent conversation between HBO president Casey Bloys and TVLine.com, Bloys told TVLine the script has not been written, but the show is definitely coming to the television screen.

Confederate is a TV drama series that takes place in an alternate universe in which the American Civil War ended in a stalemate. The stalemate allowed the Southern states to form a nation where slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, both creators and showrunners of HBO hit show Game of Thrones, are set to develop this project.

Two black writers, Nichelle Tramble Spellman (The Good Wife) and Malcolm Spellman (Empire), serve as executive producers for the show HBO show.

Last year, criticism and social media backlash was the outcome when news of this show initially broke. A hashtag, #NoConfederate, was started to oppose the development of Confederate, this show that touches a sensitive topic in American history.

Confederate is not the first show to explore an alternate history, Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle TV series takes place in a universe in which the Nazis won World War 2.

According to The New York Times, Aaron McGruder, known for creating Boondocks, will collaborate with Will Packer, producer behind Straight Outta Compton, for an alternate history TV show called Black America. McGruder’s alt-history show will be based on freed slaves receiving reparations after the civil war. The show is also set to be developed by Amazon.

The writing for Confederate starts after Benioff and Weiss finish their work with Disney and Lucasfilm. The duo was chosen to create new Star Wars movie.
