Atlanta artist Gucci Mane has gone from rap star to music executive, starting his own recording label, 1017 Records. The label has been a launchpad for several prominent artists in the rap industry. Recent events have sparked speculation among fans and critics about a possible curse on the label. Now, hip-hop fans have questions. So, is Gucci Mane’s 1017 record label cursed? Let’s break down the series of unfortunate events surrounding the artists signed to Gucci’s label.

Several 1017 artists have died since signing to Gucci Mane’s label.

Several artists signed to 1017 Records have faced unfortunate ordeals. In 2016, an altercation in a recording studio led to the tragic death of Slim Dunkin. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mario Hamilton, known as Slim, was shot after an argument about candy. In another tragic event, TMZ reports that 1017 signee Big Scarr died in 2022 from an apparent overdose. His death sent shockwaves through the Memphis rap community and left a void in the 1017 roster. Following the young MC’s death, Gucci became embroiled in a feud with Scarr’s family over funeral costs.

“You say to them you finna pay for the funeral, then you lie,” Scarr’s friend, Quezz Ruthless, said (per Hip Hop DX). “You didn’t have to lie — you ain’t have to go ghost either, cuh. It was gonna get paid for either way. You could’ve just said you ain’t have the money. You don’t get no type of respect for that, cuh.”

However, Gucci tells a different story. The rapper’s wife, Keyshia Kaoir, fired back at the accusations, sharing receipts from Gucci’s payments. Keyshia took to Instagram Story to provide receipts for the payments Gucci made, which totaled $20,000. “Payment directly to the funeral home! Leave my husband alone,” Keyshia wrote (via Baller Alert), adding, “He did this out of the goodness of his heart; we also sent flowers and not even a thank you.”

The deaths of several of 1017 artists, along with a series of strange events involving rappers from the label, have led some to question if Gucci Mane’s music conglomerate is cursed. Similarly to Big Scarr, in June 2024, Gucci’s protegé, rapper Enchanting, died of an over.

“So sad to have to say R.I.P. to such a great young lady,” Gucci wrote on Instagram. While the circumstances surrounding Enchanting’s death remain unknown, wild conspiracy theories about the label have nonetheless emerged online.

Additionally, other artists signed to 1017 Records have faced significant legal issues. One of the most notable incidents involves Pooh Shiesty. In 2021, authorities arrested Pooh, who then faced multiple charges, reports Variety.

“Ion know man, that 1017 label may have a curse [for real,]” one person tweeted. Another user wrote: “Let’s just say when you sign to these labels, you are signing up for life insurance too.”
