“No Church In The Wild” is one of the most atmospheric, esoteric cuts of the year; many have attempted a remix on top of it, and most all have fallen short of something truly entertaining, swallowed alive by Yey and Jay’s ominous portal to Luxury Rap. Redman and Ready Roc succeed on “Sourdeezal” precisely because they aim to ignore this rarified air. Instead, they lay down a tongue in cheek homage to marijuana who rides the sophisticated sound and paints a devastating portrait of a popular subject.

With Blunt Rap back in vogue thanks to rappers like Domo Genesis, A$AP Rocky and Wiz Khalifa, it is amusing to see one of the genre’s godfathers step back into the limelight and deliver his characteristically hard take on the subject matter. Unlike Snoop or Domo, Redman is decidedly not from sunny California; he is Jersey through and through, a Brick City spitter who’s lyrical content, while most often entertaining, is always administered through a voice more rough and tumble then most of his Blunt Rap peers. Ready Roc is a welcome partner in crime, a complimentary flow that can handle “No Church in the Wild.” He embraces the playful grandiosity that is at the heart of “Sourdeezal,” utilizing his thick, heavy voice to lay a line in Kanye’s run stuffed to the gills, almost to the point of bursting.

It seems preposterous that Redman and Ready Roc could release an ode to Mary Jane that runs with The Throne note for note, in particular on their headiest track. But that is precisely what they have done, and their creativity and willingness to forgo the gilded style the beat cultivates has produced one of the most entertaining remixes thus far.
