College-ish Coming To Freeform

Freeform has ordered a spin-off of ABC‘s award-winning hit series Black-ish to add to its growing roster of original series. The show is unofficially referred to as College-ish and will star actress Yara Shahidi and comedian/actor Deon Cole to reprise their roles as Zoey Johnson and  Charlie Telphy.

College-ish focuses on the Johnson’s eldest daughter Zoey and her journey through college. It’s basically the contemporary version A Different World, where The Cosby Show‘s Denise Huxtable went off to college. This show will depict current issues facing both students and administrators in the world of higher learning. Charlie Telphy of Black-ish joins the group of new characters as an adjunct marketing professor.

Freeform, originally ABC Family, is owned by Disney and airs content primarily for young adults. Its roster of shows already includes Famous In Love, Twisted, Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, The Mindy Project. The network has already ordered 13 half-hour episodes.

Black-ish has already set the bar pretty high. The show and its cast have earned numerous NAACP Image Awards, a couple TCA and Young Artists Awards, an MTV Award. and a Golden Globe. It was created by writer Kenya Barris who has worked on television series such as The Game, Are We There Yet?, Soul Food, and Girlfriends. He also wrote the third installment of Ice Cube‘s “Barbershop” series, Barbershop: The Next Cut.

Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland, and Brian Dobbins are all executive producers on the new spin-off series, alongside Kenya. The show was written by Kenya and Larry Wilmore, who worked on The Bernie Mac Show, Sister, Sister, and The Jamie Foxx Show. More recently, he teamed up with producer and actress Issa Rae to create HBO‘s Insecure.

“College-ish” is set to premiere in early 2018 on Freeform.
