The first Black woman to take home two Oscars occurred last night at the 2023 Oscars. The question is — who the heck is she?

Black Panther movies’ costume designer, Ruth E. Carter, made history by becoming the first African American woman to win two Academy Awards.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a Marvel sequel, won ‘Best Costume Design’ for Carter on Sunday night (March 12) at the 95th Academy Awards. In 2019, the designer also secured an Academy Award in the same category for Black Panther.

Carter hailed the late Chadwick Boseman in her victory speech and requested his help caring for her mother, Mabel Carter, who lost her life this past week. Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther, also received thanks from Carter.

“This is for my mother. She was 101. This film prepared me for this moment. Chadwick, please take care of mom,” Carter remarked.

Backstage, Carter then paid her late mother an homage.

“I had a great relationship with her in her final years. The same relationship I always had with her. I was her ride-or-die. I was her road dog. I was her sidekick. I know she’s proud of me. I know that she wanted this for me as much as I wanted it for myself,” Carter expressed.

By incorporating the pride of the African diaspora into the character’s fashionable and vibrant clothing to help bring Wakanda Forever to life, Carter, who served as the film’s primary costume designer, significantly contributed to Black Panther becoming a cultural sensation. She wanted to change Queen Ramonda, who was portrayed in the first movie as a queen by Angela Bassett, into a ruler in the follow-up.

Carter furthered, “Angela always wanted to play a queen, so to amplify her, we added vibranium … we gave her the royal color of purple, and adorned her in gold as she wore the crown at the UN. When she sits on the throne, she’s in a gray one-shouldered dress. The exposed shoulder shows her strength — Angela, she got those guns, right?”
