If you’re moving into your first home solo, it can be scary at first, especially when you won’t have friends and family to talk to everyday. Sure, you’re excited moving in and getting all of your decorations, furniture and belongings where you want them, but you’re nervous about coming home from work to an empty house, or waking up in the middle of the night and not feeling well, fighting the urge to call your friend or family member.

When loneliness first strikes, it may not be until a month or two when you’re moved in and everything is settled. Instead of wanting to move back home and search for houses for rent in Houston, TX, there are ways to deal with loneliness, and here’s how.

Tips to deal with loneliness

Head to the Gym

Outside of work, you shouldn’t just be sitting in your new home thinking about the fact that you’re lonely. If you enjoy walking or running, grab your purse and keys and head to your local gym. Odds are, you’ll end up finding someone the same age as you that also enjoys working out, and before long they’ll be your everyday gym buddy. Some people even meet their lifelong friends at gyms and other hobby places.

Plus, you can kill two birds with one stone here. Working out makes you sweat and gets those positive-feeling endorphins going; while chiming in with gym-goers as well.

Remember Why You’re Here

Remember those months where you couldn’t wait to move out on your own and have your own place. Remember the excitement of the unknown and the main reason why you moved. If there were any negative reasons, make note of them and realize your life is better now than it ever was. If you had any doubts about moving and living on your own, chances are, they would have hit you a few weeks before you actually packed up your things; not months into living on your own.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Like This Forever

If a year goes by and you’re still not settling in and loving the solo life, consider moving back home near friends and family, or find a roommate. Like I said before, that gym buddy or coffee shop date could turn into a lifelong friendship. Whatever the case may be, remember that you can make the change you want, and a year of living by yourself will surely tell you what is best for you.

Tour the Town

When you’re not at work, take a Saturday to yourself and make a plan to spend the entire day walking around the park, seeing a museum or two, checking out local restaurants, and boutique shopping. It’s important to immerse yourself in the life and culture of the town or city that you now live in, and will get your mind off of being lonely.

At the end of the day when you get home, you’ll be so tired that coming home to a quiet home won’t seem so bad after all. Those are the best ways to deal with loneliness.
