The mother of a victim Jeffrey Dahmer murdered has spit at Evan Peters‘ win on Tuesday (Jan 10) at the 2023 Golden Globes for his polemic role in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Tony Hughes, the late son of Shirley Hughes, was among the 17 males Dahmer killed over a twelve year period (1978 to1991). Shirley Hughes heavily criticized the decision of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to award Peters, who played the nominal serial murderer from Milwaukee, with a trophy for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Following the ceremony, Ms. Hughes told TMZ, “There’s a lot of sick people around the world. And people winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going, and this makes sick people thrive on the fame.”

Ms. Hughes expressed that Peters should have acknowledged Dahmer‘s victims while delivering his acceptance speech, or at least paid tribute to their loved ones, who still hurt and grieve. She furthered that Peters could have also used the instant to shame Hollywood for continuously glorifying twisted killers like Dahmer. Ms. Hughes remarked, “It’s a shame that people can take our tragedy and make money. The victims never saw a cent. We go through these emotions every day.” Peters thanked various persons in his speech such as family, friends, Ryan Murphy (the show’s creator), even cast and crew—however, he didn’t speak one word regarding the victims or their families. “I sincerely hope some good came out of [the show],” Peters added at the end.

In October 2022, Ms. Hughes accursed the Netflix series about Dahmer and its depiction of her and her deceased son, informing publications that while she hadn’t viewed the entire series that it certainly “didn’t happen like that.” Ms. Hughes spoke at the time, “I don’t see how they can do that. I don’t see how they can use our names and put stuff out like that out there.” Since its release, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has received backfire from other families of the serial murderer’s victims as well.

31-year-old Tony Hughes, who was deaf, was an aspirant model when Dahmer took his life in 1991. “Silenced,” the sixth episode in the series, examines Tony‘s fellowship with Dahmer, following the men as they learn about each other after meeting at a local bar. Tony‘s mom, portrayed by Karen Malina White, appears in the episode as well, and at the dining room table she and her son subsequently share a heartfelt discourse.
