On the night of November 2nd Beyoncé and the Dixie Chicks delivered a vibrant performance at the 50th annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards in Nashville, singing Daddy Lessons from the Lemonade album, which Beyoncé released earlier this year.

The live performance was quite memorable, and so was Beyoncé’s wedding-like outfit, which forced us to keep our eyes on her and also on Dixie Chicks’ members Martie Maguire, Emily Robison, and Natalie Maines, who all wore black attire. One day after the show an official seven-minute long video of the song – which was co-written by Wynter Gordon and is already a Hot 100 hit – was released on the Tidal music streaming network, although a teaser has been made public:

One of the best-selling artists of all time, the former Destiny’s Child singer is also a dancer, actress, and businesswoman who has won 20 Grammys, 24 MTV Video Music Awards, 21 BET Awards, and six Billboard Music Awards.

In addition to her musical career, Beyoncé has been nominated for the Best Actress award at the Golden Globes for her role in the 2006 smash Dreamgirls. In 2012 she was also named The World’s Most Beautiful Woman by People Magazine and was ranked #1 on the Forbes Celebrity 100 List. Married to another big star, Jay Z, she’s always in the spotlight and is adored by millions of fans, including many fellow celebrities, for providing an empowering figure for women everywhere.

Daddy Lessons includes some clear references to Beyoncé’s personal life, particularly her Houston upbringing. Although her father has Bahamian roots – and the beautiful paradise islands are a frequent hideaway for Beyoncé and her husband, who enjoy the luxurious One&Only Ocean Club Resort on occassion – Mathew Knowles was born in Alabama and moved to Houston in 1976. The Texas city is deeply connected to country music culture and in Daddy Lessons, Queen Bey manages to pay tribute to the West African roots of the genre.

This explains her choice to performing the song alongside the Dixie Chicks, who are enjoying the career renaissance all musical groups hope to experience after their star begins to fade.
Beyonce’s presence at the CMA Awards wasn’t confirmed until the last minute, and she actually showed up two hours into the show, but her performance with the Dixie Chicks was clearly the most remarkable – and also controversial – one of the night. The truth is that Daddy Lessons, with an eclectic combination of voices and rhythms, is one of the best songs to emerge from Lemonade, which has already been listed among the biggest albums of 2016.
