DaBaby Sued for Stealing "ROCKSTAR" Beat From Producer

DaBaby sued for stealing?! Well, it looks like he might not be such a rockstar after all!

According to most recent reports, the “Baby on Baby 2” rapper has been sued for (allegedly) jacking the beat for his uber-successful 2020 hit “ROCKSTAR,” which featured fellow lyricist Roddy Ricch.

Apparently, a producer named JuJu Beatz sent his track “Selena” to DaBaby’s team in 2019. The next year, “ROCKSTAR” was ironically released with an identical instrumental, and they completely excluded Beatz from the song’s production.

Filed on Friday (December 9), the lawsuit read:

Plaintiff provided his musical composition known as ‘Selena’ to Defendants in 2019, who then used Selena to create a sound recording entitled “Rockstar.’ Defendant Diaz and DaBaby’s representative accessed Plaintiff’s ‘Selena’ on more than 40 occasions in late 2019 and early 2020. On, or around April of 2020, Defendants DaBaby, Roddy Ricch, and Portaro released, through the other named Defendants, a sound recording titled ‘Rockstar’ that included many compositional elements from Plaintiff’s Selena composition.

Court documents (exclusively obtained by Rolling Stone) listed Baby and his publishing company, Project Dreams Entertainment, along with Ricch, producer Sethinthekitchen, Interscope Records A&R Caroline Diaz, Warner Chappell Music, and Universal Music Group as those responsible for the melody’s robbery.

“It is too easy for the labels and mainstream artists and producers to cut out the ones who really matter the most,” JuJu Beatz’s attorney said in a statement. “It is disheartening because there is enough money in the industry to change everyone’s lives but the money usually ends up in the hands of the few.”

The frustrated hitmaker is seeking to retrieve a whopping total of $150,000 in statutory damages… per infringement.

“ROCKSTAR” served as the second single from DaBaby’s third album, Blame It on Baby. The song was highly-acclaimed, as it ultimately led the Billboard Hot 100 chart for seven non-consecutive weeks and gained multiple nominations. To this day, the certified 5x platinum, trap bop is one of DaBaby and Roddy Ricch’s most notable collaborations.

None of the accused parties have spoken on the legal matter as of yet. However, we’re hoping that all are able to reach an amicable resolution soon.
