Carly X is a growing force to reckoned with!

This vibrant artist is originally from Long Island, New York. She has had a way with lyrics from a young age after discovering the greats like Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill and Nicki Minaj. Drawing inspiration from R&B pioneers of the ’70s to now,  songs like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrel, as well as “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” by Mcfadden & Whitehead are cited as giving her inspiration.

Her start as a creative can be traced back to when she began putting music out online on platforms like Youtube & Soundcloud. It took a positive turn at 19, when she was handpicked by Busta Rhymes & Doritos to be a top-five finalist out of thousands of competitors in a rap contest. This led to her opening for Wiz Khalifa and having her video recognized & published by Billboard Magazine.

Dark Frequency comes with an edge, being a two-track single featuring the songs, “Lowkey” and “Don’t Mind Me.” It is inspired by her difficult times and the silent battles that she faces on her own. She notes that “No matter how bright a light may seem to shine, it’s only a matter of time until darkness arrives. Sometimes we pretend everything is ok, sometimes we let the darkness consume us, and sometimes we fight to see the light again.” Being a versatile artist, her love for multiple genres led her to place two different sounding tracks together to make the masterpiece that is Dark Frequency.

Parlé Mag caught up with Carly X to get to know more about her music and this is how it went

Parlé Mag:  Why a 2 -track single?
Carly X: Dark Frequency is a 2- track single because I wanted to display that I can’t be boxed into a sub-genre of rap. The two records are completely different yet I found a way to make them mesh well together. I love rapping on chill and laid-back beats, but I also love rapping on hard and uptempo beats. I would never want to neglect one side of my artistry to appeal to a specific audience, so by delivering these two flavors at once, I get to attract two different audiences at once.

Parlé Mag:  What are you planning to do next?
Carly X: I am working on an EP that I’m aiming to drop this year. In the meantime, I’ll be delivering different singles throughout the year.

Parlé Mag:  What does success in the music business look like for you?
Carly X: Success in the music business for me looks like a career where I could turn my rap career into a conglomerate. I would love to use the music to branch off into many different areas of entertainment. I also want to be a legend and a name people have to mention when speaking on Long Island. There are a lot of male rap legends that came from here but there are no female rap legends.

Parlé Mag:  What’s been the biggest obstacle thus far in your music career?
Carly X: The biggest obstacle in my music career has been artist development. I always knew how to rap but rapping and creating music are two different things. After a conversation I had with someone from All Def, I realized I needed to get some music out. Ever since then I’ve been trying to learn how to construct timeless records. To this day, I am still dedicating time and effort to make sure all my creative ideas flow well on beats that make people feel something.
