Black country singers have been around for decades. If we look into the history of country music, we will run across black country artists who have shaped the genre. Charley Pride was the first black artist to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2020 he received Country Music Association’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Linda Martell was the first black woman to make the country charts which paved the way for many other black country singers.

Despite the success of those pioneers there was still a wall between Black country artists and Black support. It almost feels like it wasn’t until Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter album that people wanted to learn more. But there was a lot of controversary behind Beyonce gaining spotlight being in the genre. Many people declared that there were a lot of black country artists that people have slept on. Tony Evans Jr., Jimmie Allen, Mickey Guyton (pictured above) are just a few of those Black Country artists who have been making a name for themselves the last few years.

We have gathered six more Black country singers that we feel people should have on their playlist. So if you’re interested in finding out who we deem to be playlist worthy, keep reading.

Tanner Adell

Last year, Tanner Adell created a lot of buzz on social media with her hit song “Buckle Bunny.” The young star became the first country artist to perform at the BET Awards. Of course she had to perform the song that brought her so much attention.

Shaboozey

When they say don’t judge a book by it’s cover, they are talking about Shaboozey. Many would try to confine him to a box but truth be told… Shaboozey couldn’t even fit. He dabbles in Hop-Hop, country and rock roll. His latest single “A Bar Song” dives into more of a hillbilly vibe. Shaboozey is steadily finding ways to break the boundaries of music and we are here for it.

Brittney Spencer

In 2020, Brittney received high praises for a cover she did by Highwomen. In 2023, she appeared on Beyonce’s song “BLACKBIIRD,” where she received recognition as well. Brittney has been named Rolling Stones “25 Artists to Watch.” Now with her debut album My Stupid Life she is setting the tone for country music.

RVSHVD

RVSHVD isn’t your average rodeo. He has created a whirl of content as he created his own country twists to hits such as “The Box” and “Drip Too Hard.” His covers along with his debut album Memories, was just the momentum he needed to continue stealing hearts. With his single “Deal With the Devil” he is working towards creating a very solid fan base.

Breland

We know that we have named quite a few black country singers so far but Breland definitely needs to be on your list. Breland’s music has set the bar for country music thus far & he continues to do so. His platinum-certified mix song “My Truck” shattered speakers all over. Most people have compared the hit to Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.”

Reyna Roberts

Last but certainly not least, Reyna Roberts is the black country artist who will be in your face. Her latest album, Bad Girl Bible Vol. 1, stirred up the country music fans — especially with her song “Miranda” that appeared on the album. Her music has been broadcasted on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. She has even been co-signed by Carried Underwood & Mickey Guyton. So if you don’t know who Reyna Roberts is, now is your chance to get to know her.

Now that you are up to speed with the Black country singers that you should know, who’s your favorite? These artists are only a few that are getting the recognition that they deserve. There are so many other Black country artists.

So if country hasn’t really been your thing, I can bet you that listening to these artists will change your perspective.
