“Grey’s Anatomy” has been a staple of TV drama since it first aired in 2005 and is arguably one of Shonda Rhimes’ best shows. The hit medical series has captivated audiences with its blend of gripping medical cases and complex, relatable characters. The show’s success is due to its intense storylines, strong performances, and diverse cast. The best Black characters on Grey’s Anatomy have left a significant mark on the ensemble. From their powerful story arcs to their memorable personalities, these characters have enriched the show and resonated deeply with fans.

Here are the best Black characters on “Grey’s Anatomy” that we love(d).

Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson)

This first choice was obvious! She is the most-appearing character in the series and has a special place in the hearts of many. Dr. Miranda Bailey, known as “The Nazi” in the early seasons, is one of the most iconic Black characters on “Grey’s Anatomy.” Played by Chandra Wilson, Bailey is a fierce, dedicated surgeon who balances her tough-love approach with profound compassion. She’s been a central figure on the show since its beginning. She has experienced growth from attending general surgery, being chief of surgery, running her own clinic, and returning to teaching interns.

And before you wonder if Wilson plans on leaving the series anytime soon, the answer is no. She opened up to PEOPLE about staying on the show to the very end.

Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams)

Jesse Williams’s portrayal of Dr. Jackson Avery is another standout Black character we love. One, he was known and admired for his looks. But in addition to being handsome, he was often the voice of reason. As a skilled plastic surgeon and a key player in the show’s narrative, his journey from an ambitious resident to a respected surgeon is noteworthy. Dr. Jackson’s relationships, especially with April Kepner and his work with the Harper Avery Foundation, added depth to the series.

Dr. Jackson left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to run the Harper Avery Foundation in Boston, following in his mother’s footsteps. This marked the end of an era for one of the best Black characters on Grey’s Anatomy.

Williams has since reprised his role for an episode in season 19.

Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.)

Dr. Richard Webber is a cornerstone of the series. As the former Chief of Surgery and mentor to many, Richard’s character has been pivotal in guiding and shaping the hospital’s future. His struggles with alcohol addiction, his complex relationship with his wife, and his role in mentoring young surgeons have made him a beloved figure.

Richard has been a constant presence throughout the series and, like Dr. Bailey, one of the original cast members. He is also the biological father of Dr. Maggie Pierce (Dr. Meredith Grey’s half-sister), which was one of the shocking moments of season 10.

Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary)

Oh, Dr. Maggie Pierce! What can we say? Her character was memorable! She is a cardiothoracic surgeon and the half-sister of the series protagonist, Meredith Grey. Pierce’s entrance into the series in season 10 as a guest role and later as a recurring role in season 11 brought fresh dynamics. Her intelligence, personal growth, and evolving relationships with other characters have been key to many storylines. Now, I know most people were shocked to find out that Dr. Webber was her biological father, but was anyone else conflicted when she got with her step-brother Jackson?

Kelly McCreary said farewell to the role in season 19. Dr. Pierce would go on to pursue a new job in Chicago.

Dr. Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton)

Listen, this next Black character was underrated. Dr. Stephanie Edwards, portrayed by Jerrika Hinton, is a notable character whose presence on the show left a strong impression. Stephanie’s dedication and personal growth were significant parts of her storyline as a surgical resident. Her character’s emotional arc and interactions with other doctors highlighted her impact on the hospital dynamics.

Edwards left the show in the finale of season 13 after a near-death experience.

Dr. Ben Warren (Jason George)

Who didn’t love Dr. Ben Warren, portrayed by Jason George? He was indecisive, but he figured it out in the end. We first met his character in season six, when he was an anesthesiologist and developed a relationship with his future wife, Dr. Bailey. He later changes his career to surgeon. Well, it didn’t end there. Dr. Warren’s journey reflects his dedication to medicine and public service, and he officially became a firefighter.

George left after season 14 for the popular spinoff “Station 19.” However, that wasn’t the end of Dr. Warren’s medical career. After seven seasons as a firefighter, he returned to complete his residency. Told you, he was indecisive.

These characters solidified their places in our hearts with their stories, struggles, and triumphs, so we deemed them the best Black characters on “Grey’s Anatomy.” Although it was hard to see some of our favorites depart, it’s exciting to see the future Black characters we fall in love with.
