Angie Stone Accuses Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson of Stealing Her Song

New year, new problems—and they only seem to get worse! Veteran soul singer, Angie Stone recently did an interview with The Sun, and revealed that she thinks Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson robbed her and her former all-female rap group, The Sequence, of their 1979 song, “Funk You Up”. Angie Stone accuses Bruno Mars and Ronson of using her song to create their 2014 hit, “Uptown Funk”. She feels that it was the utmost disrespect and is planning to sue.

“As far as I’m concerned, the song belongs to us. We have been robbed, railroaded, overlooked, and completely disrespected. Everyone got paid but my group. The truth of the matter is, no one on that suit deserves it more than The Sequence, because those lyrics are ours. “Funk You Up” was ours. We branded it in 1979.” Stone proclaimed.

The singer also said that she and her former group members had been trying to sue Mars and Ronson for the longest—even before the song became ‘Record of The Year’ at the Grammys, but, due to lawyers refusing to take the case, they haven’t succeeded in doing so.

However, after hearing that Pharrell and Robin Thicke lost their case against the Marvin Gaye Estate and was found guilty of stealing the legend’s 1977 hit “Got To Give It Up, Stone stated that she has been encouraged to go forth with pursuing the lawsuit.

In today’s business, it is definitely not uncommon for artists to steal other’s musical concepts. Is “Uptown Funk” a modernized replica of “Funk You Up”? Ehh, we’d say the tune sounds similar—though it is a lot faster than “Funk You Up”.

We’re hoping that Stone, Mars, and Ronson can all come together to settle outside of the courts. We all know that court cases tend to get messy from time to time.
