African-Americans are seemingly finally taking over with lead roles and supporting roles in movies.  Last night at the 91st Oscars, several African-Americans had a chance to win their FIRST Oscar ever! It was amazing to see African Americans highlighted at the 2019 Academy Awards.  Regina King won her first Oscar EVER for best supporting actress for her role in the movie If Beale Street Could Talk. Previously, the actress has taken home two Emmy’s; one being for best lead actress in a role for the movie ‘Seven Seconds‘ and the other for outstanding supporting actress in ‘American Crime‘.

Mahershela Ali became the second black actor to win two Academy Awards last night.  Ali took home the award for best supporting actor in a role for his latest film, Green Book, which also won ‘Best Picture’ as well! Two years ago Ali won his FIRST Oscar Award for best supporting actor for the film Moonlight.

A lot of people were hoping that ‘Black Panther’ would take home the ‘Best Picture’ award.  Although it didn’t, the movie did take home three awards.  Ruth Carter took home her first Oscar Award for ‘Best Costume Design’ for Black Panther and Hannah Beachler took home the award for ‘Best Production Design’ in Black Panther as well.  Another category that the film won was for ‘Best Original Score’. No individual cast members were nominated for a supporting or lead actress/actor roles, but the movie was still a big winner, becoming the first Marvel movie to win an Academy Award, taking home three Oscar Awards!

Spike Lee
, the director and writer who was famously snubbed for an Academy Award for his film Do the Right Thing 30 years ago, won an award for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ for the critically acclaimed film, BlacKkKlansman.

Congratulations to all the winners!
