A Tribe Called Quest, Missy Elliot Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Bound

A Tribe Called Quest and Missy Elliot are Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees. On Wednesday (February 1), The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation revealed its list of candidates for the induction ceremony taking place in 2023. Additional nominees include Willie Nelson, George Michael, Rage Against The Machine, Iron Maiden, and Cyndi Lauper; however, as far as Hip Hop goes, Tribe and Missy are leading the pack.

A Tribe Called Quest was nominated previously in 2022, however, weren’t inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame due to not receiving enough votes. There was a Hip Hop act inducted into the Hall last year, though, and that was Eminem; the Detroit native finished with roughly 685,000 votes and only Duran Duran had more votes than him on the fan ballot. Nonetheless, this is Missy Elliot‘s first year of eligibility for the Hall of Fame and she unprecedently received a thumbs up for a nomination.

After hearing the news about her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination, Missy Elliot took to Instagram and wrote, “I have cried my eyes out! I am so HUMBLY GRATEFUL for this nomination with also 14 other Amazing artist so grateful. To All of you & my fans who been through this journey with me I Thank You also 4 helping me get here. YOU ROCK.” If inducted into The Hall, A Tribe Called Quest and Missy Elliott will join an expanding list of rap regality such as Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls, N.W.A, Tupac Shakur, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5.

Aside from recently receiving her second doctorate degree, Missy Elliot was the first female Hip Hop act inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame back in 2019. At the ceremony, the “Supa Dupa Fly” rapper spoke: “Every time I come up to a podium … even with all the work that I’ve done, I don’t know, and I’m assuming it’s just God, I don’t know why I am here. I want to say one thing to the writers, to the upcoming writers, ‘Do not give up.’ We all go through writer’s block. Sometimes you just have to walk away from a record and come back to it. But don’t give up because I’m standing here. And this is big for Hip Hop, too.”
