The best way to keep your apartment clean is to prevent clutter from accumulating. Here’s how to stop apartment clutter before it becomes a problem!

By now, you’ve probably read an article or two about how to keep your apartment organized. The advice is helpful, but unfortunately, your apartment still looks cluttered!

Admittedly, it’s not easy to keep things from piling up. You end up having one too many keepsakes lying around.

The problem is that decluttering your apartment takes a lot of time. You can spend weeks trying to get stuff in order.

But, here’s a solution:

Instead of decluttering your apartment every few months, why not prevent clutter from accumulating in the first place? That way, it’ll never become a problem!

In this article, we’ll discuss seven steps you can take to stop apartment clutter from building up.

One by one, give them a shot. Before you know it, your apartment will be clutter-free!

1. Put a Paper Shredder by the Front Door

If you tend to get a lot of junk mail, there’s an easy solution to getting rid of it:

Put a paper shredder by the front door.

We realize that putting a paper shredder near the door isn’t ideal, but it helps. If it’s an eyesore, you can disguise it by placing it between a few storage cubes.

As soon as you bring your mail inside, shred the junk and move it to the recycling bin. You’ll feel great getting rid of it.

Trust me when I say it’s worth the investment to place a shredder near your entryway. It’ll prevent your junk mail from infiltrating the rest of your apartment!

2. Don’t Allow Clutter Inside

It’s easier said than done, but right from the start, don’t let clutter inside.

That means you should be very selective about what comes into your apartment. You are your apartment’s keeper.

It’s far too easy to invite everything under the sun inside. Instead of bringing in more junk and stuff you don’t need, think twice. Ask yourself if you really need it. And if you do, where are you going to put it?

You can always replace one thing for another. For example, if you’re dying to buy a new chair, force yourself to get rid of a chair you already have.

Sticking to this technique will keep your apartment a lot tidier.

3. Don’t Spend Beyond Your Means

Budgeting isn’t for everyone, and it’s easy to spend more than you have. Don’t worry; everyone struggles with this from time to time.

But, learning to stay disciplined with your money will help you keep your apartment clean. After all, when you buy fewer things, you’ll have less stuff coming through your front door.

If you’re spending beyond your budget each month, hold off on buying things. It’s only going to create a mess inside your apartment.

Only purchase items if you need them, not because you want them. After you’re able to stop yourself from buying things for a few months, reward yourself with something that’ll look nice in your home.

Stay within your means, avoid buying things you don’t need, and you’ll reap the rewards!

4. Embrace Small Keepsakes

Bigger isn’t always better, especially when it comes to furniture and home accessories.

For example, let’s say you have a giant quilt and book that your Grandma handed down to you. Instead of keeping both items, see if you can part with the quilt, which is bigger and harder to store.

I realize that this may be difficult, but it’ll help you keep your apartment clean and free of clutter.

Go through this process for the rest of your keepsakes, too. Line everything up, find the biggest ones, and ask yourself if you really need them.

Looking at everything will help you decide which items should go and which ones should stay. It’s okay to keep a few big things, but getting rid of them will open a lot of space in your home.

5. Don’t Subscribe to Magazines or Newspapers

Sure, it’s great to support print magazines, but you can get the digital version instead.

Magazines and newspapers take up a lot of space and are hard to transport, so it’s better to get rid of them.

If there is a particular issue you can’t live without, keep it. But ultimately, subscribing online will prevent paper media from piling up. You’ll still be supporting the publication, but you’ll save space in your apartment!

Plus, having them on a device will make it easy to find the issue you want. That’s a lot better than rummaging through a bunch of magazines trying to find a specific issue.

BONUS: Stick with the Same Theme

As opposed to buying a bunch of mismatched decor, it’s better to stick to one theme. A theme will help you set limits on the items that enter your apartment.

Having a single theme throughout your apartment may seem mundane, but it doesn’t have to be. You can select a few different color schemes that blend in well together.

A set theme will give your apartment a cohesive look. And more importantly, it’ll prevent unnecessary clutter from building up in your home.

So, don’t get tempted to buy too many decorations and accessories. Be thoughtful about what will look best, and don’t go overboard. You can create a stylish apartment with very few elements.

And if you’re afraid you’ll get bored with a single theme, don’t worry; you can always switch things up later when you want a new look!

In Conclusion

As you can see, there are a lot of ways to prevent clutter from taking over your apartment.

In today’s day and age, it’s easy to want more, more, more. That’s what society tells us is acceptable, so we follow suit.

But instead of getting sucked into the “I want more” mindset, try to adopt a minimalist lifestyle. Not only will your apartment look far less cluttered, but you’ll experience less anxiety.

Appreciate your current possessions and treat yourself to new ones from time to time. As long as you don’t overwhelm your space, it’s okay to get a new decoration every once in a while.

You have the option to create a beautiful, clutter-free apartment. Now, make it happen!
