Stressed out? Read this! Here are seven easy ways to calm down when you’re feeling overwhelmed by life. You’ll feel better in no time!

At any given moment, there is so much going on around us. Sometimes, the noise can be deafening. You know you’re in over your head, but you don’t quite know how to get on top of things again.

Stress is a struggle we all face, but it’s something you can actively manage.

Here, you will learn some effective ways to cope with life and deal with overwhelming feelings. These tips will give you a better grasp of the situation and provide the tools you need to handle your stress on a daily basis.

1. Identify the Causes

The most important step is finding where the stress begins.

Now, there are likely multiple causes for your stress if you’re feeling overwhelmed. It’s all piled up, one thing on top of the other, until you can’t see over it anymore.

You still need to identify all of the stressors that you possibly can.

It’s helpful if you know the signs and symptoms of stress. That way, you can connect those feelings to the things bringing them about.

Write down what in your life right now is contributing to your stress. It doesn’t matter how insignificant it is. If it’s stressing you out even a little bit, write it down so you can get a handle on it.

Prioritize the issues from the most important to the least important. Tackle the big things first and leave the small things for another time.

As you work your way through each issue, you’re bound to feel your load lighten over time.

2. Do Some Deep Breathing

When you start to feel overwhelmed, it can be easy to lose yourself in the moment. Don’t let it get the best of you. Remove your mind from it and focus instead on your breathing for a few minutes.

Even a few minutes of concentration on something else can do a world of good.

Try some simple breathing exercises. Focusing on your breath puts your mind entirely in the present. You get to ignore what’s overwhelming you for a short time in favor of doing something easy and natural.

Breathing is the easiest thing in the world, and you can do it anywhere.

Taking the time to step away and quiet your mind will help you get past those stressful moments.

3. Disconnect Physically and Mentally

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself when you start to feel overwhelmed is to check out completely.

Take your mind, emotions, or even your entire body away from the situation.

Go for a walk to separate yourself from the source of your stress. Or, do some exercise to get your blood pumping and give yourself a surge of energy.

Working out releases endorphins that are naturally uplifting.

Take the time to read part of the book you’ve been working on. Watch a movie that will make you feel good and relaxed. If you can swing it, take a quick cat nap. That sort of refresher is a miracle worker for the mind.

4. Say No to Anything Extra

When you’re already overwhelmed, you need to focus on your limitations. You’ve passed your threshold for obligations and don’t need to take on any more.

Learn to say no. In fact, make it your default answer right now.

Saying no is absolutely crucial to getting past this point of feeling overwhelmed. The more you have on your plate, the more stressed you’re bound to be. It’s a cycle that you need to actively put an end to.

This doesn’t just apply to work. You should also say no to social events if you aren’t up to them. Don’t go just because you have free time.

It’s more important to prioritize yourself and your health, even if that means staying home on the weekend to unwind.

5. Focus on What You’re Thankful For

Take a few minutes every day to think about what you have to be grateful for.

Gratitude is extremely beneficial for your mental health, especially when it comes to lowering your stress levels. It reinforces the positive in your life and makes you feel happier overall.

Set aside a few minutes first thing in the morning or just before you go to bed (or both) to write down a few things you’re thankful for.

Keep your gratitude journal close as a handy reminder of how much you have, even when life seems overbearing.

6. Take It One Day at a Time

Getting ahead of yourself is a good way to worsen the feeling of being overwhelmed. The further ahead you look, the bigger your to-do list will seem.

Don’t think about what’s ahead of you in a day, a week, or even a year. When you get up in the morning, plan for your day.

That’s it — just one day.

Just today.

Figure out how you’re going to get through the next 24 hours. Think of what’s ahead of you and deal with it before you even consider tomorrow.

You don’t have to worry about tomorrow until tomorrow comes.

7. Ask for Help

Getting help from friends, family members, and coworkers is a wonderful way to combat stress. Having help makes every task more manageable.

If you don’t absolutely need to do something by yourself, why should you?

When life begins to feel too overwhelming, seek out someone that can lend a hand in digging you out.

Talking to someone, whether they are a loved one or a professional, can do wonders. Sometimes, unburdening yourself in a nice, long chat is the best thing you can do to feel better about life.

In Conclusion

Overwhelming feelings aren’t something you should ignore. Too much stress can lead to burnout and other health problems. It’s essential to find coping mechanisms that work for you when it starts to become too much to handle.

Take these suggestions and give them a try when you’re feeling overwhelmed with life and everything it’s throwing at you.

And remember, this too shall pass.
